Anorexia is an eating disorder that could be a life threatening disorder. The individual would starve themselves to achieve their ideal weight. The good news about this is that there are a lot of steps a parent can do to help their children cope as an anorexic.
As a parent, the first step you can take is be observant of your child’s eating habits, behavior and health. A few signs you could look out for are excessive weight loss, overboard exercising, your child starting to get withdrawn or they start being really fussy about their food and are counting calories. If you do suspect that your child has an eating disorder, sit them down and speak to them.
Do not attack your child. Instead, try and understand your child’s feelings. Try to get to the bottom of their problem. Why are they suddenly exhibiting a sudden interest in their weight? Furthermore, teach them coping techniques they can use to handle the peer pressure and stress.
Secondly, do not place emphasis on body images. You should not focus on the person’s weight.
Don’t pass off snide or negative comments about other people’s weight. All these will leave a lasting impression on your child.
Thirdly, establish meal times. Make sure your child has three square meals a day. Have your family eat together for dinners and breakfasts. Wake up early in the morning to prepare a healthy breakfast. Make sure your child never skips their breakfast.
Fourthly, be sure to listen to your child. If your child keeps on talking about her weight, listen to it. If she is still obsessing, you could bring her to a physician to be assessed. If her weight falls within a healthy range, you could bring your child to see a therapist because counseling is needed. If your child is underweight, talk to them seriously and tell them of the medical complications that could arise from being anorexic. If she is on the overweight side, perhaps you could devise an exercise plan that involves the whole family.
Healthy alternatives are that your whole family could do together.
In conclusion, parents have a very important part in helping their child cope as an anorexic. So educate yourself today for your child’s better health.
